Moses doubted, disobeyed, and drifted, but God never turned away from him. Today we get a glimpse at the tender way God shepherded Moses and equipped him to lead the Israelites. We will explore how God patiently answered Moses’ questions, calmed his fears, and reassured him. Moses’ story teaches us that God does not define us by our mistakes, but rather uses our weakness to teach us how to depend on Him for all things.

"I will tend My flock and let them lie down." This is the declaration of the Lord God. Ezekiel 34:15

Sheep are helpless, timid, and feeble. They are wholly dependent on their shepherd for everything.

Jehovah Raah (Jĕ·hō·vah Ra'ah) faithfully shepherds His flock. He feeds, leads, and protects us from danger.

No other Hebrew name of God expresses such tenderness and intimacy.

The Great Shepherd knows His flock by name.

He pursues us when we wander, carries us when we are weak, and rescues us when we are in peril.

Then He equips us to do the same for others (Gal. 6:2).

Day 5: God Rescues Moses from Insecurity
Today’s Scripture Reading: Exodus 3:7-14 ESV {Read Online}
As a young man living in Pharaoh's house (Exod. 2:10), Moses seemed to be in the perfect position to rescue and restore the Israelites.

Yet he squandered it all in a moment of anger and pride (Exod. 2:11-15).

Moses murdered an Egyptian in cold blood, then ran away from his problems and his people.

When God spoke to him from the burning bush, Moses was an alien in a foreign country—shepherding a flock he didn’t own.

Not exactly the type of person I would choose to rescue a nation of enslaved people.

Yet, God had a plan for Moses’ life and patiently shepherded him back to the flock.

Divine rescue of a wandering heart often transforms the wanderer into a rescuer. {Click to Tweet}
When God shared His divine rescue plan with Moses, all Moses could see was his own shortcomings and weaknesses.

Insecurity plagued Moses and threatened to cripple him, yet God persevered!

When Moses asked, "Who am I?" God replied, "I am with you." (Exod. 3:11)

When Moses questioned, "What if they don’t believe me?" God provided miraculous signs for him to perform. (Exod. 4:1-9)

When Moses doubted, "But I can’t speak." God reassured, "I will help you speak." (Exod. 4:10-12)

When Moses pleaded, "Please send someone else." God encouraged, "Aaron will help you." (Exod. 4:13-15)

God took notice of His flock’s suffering and sent a shepherd to lead them out of slavery.

Even though God promised the end result (Exod. 3:17), Moses still had to do the hard work.

Our Response to Moses' Story

Before sending Moses to rescue the Israelites, God assured him of four important things:

I am sending you.
I will be with you.
You will bring My people out of Egypt. They will worship Me.

God is the only one capable of rescuing His flock from danger.

Yet, in His infinite wisdom, He chooses to allow us to play a part in His divine rescue plan. And He faithfully guides us every step of the way!

Where is God sending you?
How is He reassuring you of His presence?
What promises has He spoken to you?
Is your life inspiring others to worship God?

If you do not have answers to these questions, that’s okay. Studying God’s Word is the best way to get to know Him and the plans and purposes He has for your life.

Just don’t be surprised if He asks you to do something well beyond your ability to accomplish on your own.

The #1 Reason Christians Need to Revisit the Ten Commandments

The Israelites didn't treasure God's Ten Commandments like they should have, and they suffered greatly for this choice. And His commands were not just for the Israelites. They are also for you and me. Not to be carried like a yoke of slavery, but to be cherished like a gift from our Beloved. God’s law is for our benefit! It reminds us He is holy. It teaches us how to live. It guides us through the desert. It shapes us into His image. {Read the Article}
